As a child, my mom used to drag me to weekend rummage sales. I used to dread running into someone I knew. What if they noticed that the furniture that she brought home would end up in my bedroom? As I got older, though, the embarrassment that I felt from shopping someone else’s discards turned into a passion for finding the treasure amongst the clutter. These days, I enjoy a good flea market or garage sale when I get the chance. It really is remarkable some of the things that one can find by ignoring the department store for the day and turning to resale shopping. Some of the treasures to look for? The possibilities are endless: antique scales (one of the only things I collect), whimsical plates, vintage jewelry, classic and one-of-a-kind furniture, hat boxes, purses, decorative mirrors and quilts– and everything else you can imagine. It’s a treat to find that statement piece that will have everyone asking, “wherever did you find that?”. With nicer weather arriving, change up your normal Saturday routine, grab a coffee and newspaper. You can scan the local classified ads for active flea markets and rummage sales so you can find that special piece to make all your own. Get inspired!
